Diver Graham Takes The Plunge For Life Changing Knee Surgery
Thursday 25 May 2017

An avid diver took the plunge to have knee surgery at Woodthorpe Hospital and is thrilled with the outcome.

Graham Elliott has undergone a total knee replacement at the Nottingham-based private hospital and is looking forward to getting back in the water again.

The 58-year-old has suffered with knee problems for 20 years, mainly due to a career in the armed forces.

His knee was badly hurt in a training exercise and he says he has never fully recovered.

Graham, of Bingham, said: “I have struggled with my knee for a long time. I had knee arthroscopy surgery which helped for a while but the pain was still there.

“I love diving as a hobby but my knee problem was restricting me because I couldn’t even bend down to get my fins on.

“In fact I reached the point where I couldn’t even walk 200 metres, the pain was so intense.”

Graham approached Woodthorpe Hospital to speak to consultant Mr Paul Szypryt and he suggested a total knee replacement because his knee cartilage had badly worn away.

After his initial consultation, he was given a date for surgery just weeks later.

Graham said: “I knew that a total knee replacement was the only way forward and to put an end to the pain once and for all.

“I had tried to put a brave face on it for a long time but when it started to badly affect my mobility, that’s when I had to do something about it.

“The consultant and all the staff at Woodthorpe Hospital were absolutely fantastic before, during and after the operation. The hospital is first class and I would recommend it to anyone.”

Knee replacements are available at Woodthorpe through the NHS or patients can pay privately for their treatment to speed up the process.

Graham is looking forward to getting back in the water to enjoy his favourite past time following his life changing surgery.

He added: “The operation has made a huge difference and the pain has virtually gone.

“Thanks to Woodthorpe Hospital and the surgery I’ve had I feel like a different person and I can look forward to getting back into my diving again.”
