Academic Background
After completing his basic surgical training in the East Midlands (Nottingham & Derby), Mr Salem embarked on a two-year Doctorate in Medicine (DM) degree at the University of Nottingham. He, subsequently completed his higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopedics at the East Midlands (North) Deanery where he was privileged to work with leading figures in the fields of spinal surgery and trauma. After the successful completion of the royal college fellowship exams (FRCS (T&O)) and six years of general orthopaedic training including a whole year of spinal surgery, he was admitted to the GMC specialist register in 2013. Since then, he completed two prestigious fellowships in internationally renowned centres of excellence in spinal surgery; the first year, he spent in the Centre for spinal studies and surgery (CSSS) at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, while his second year was in Canada at the Vancouver Spine Surgery Institute. During his training, he gained substantial experience in the management of adult spinal pathology and developed an evidence based approach to the treatment of spinal trauma, tumour, degenerative pathology and adult spinal deformity, the latter being his major sub specialist interest. He maintains an active involvement academically and has published numerous papers and book chapters in international journals and books focused on the field of spinal surgery.
