Woodthorpe Hospital patient Lin Freestone is enjoying a much brighter horizon again thanks to cataract surgery.

Lin had the operation in her right eye which had deteriorated badly in the last 12 months and is thrilled with the outcome 

She was referred for surgery by her GP and when Woodthorpe was put forward as an option she had no hesitation in going there.

Lin was able to see the consultant Mr Amar Alwitry and have the cataract surgery done on the same day as part of the one stop cataract service which is available at the hospital.

The 75-year-old was even more delighted when her appointment was brought forward which meant she could have the surgery before watching her grandson perform in a production at London’s Royal Opera House.

Her operation was a huge success and massively improved the vision in her right eye.

Lin, of Daybrook, Nottingham, said: “I had reached the point where I wasn’t safe to be out on my own really because the depth perception in my right eye had completely gone.

“It was becoming difficult to see, particularly in bright, dazzling sunlight. My optician had been monitoring it but it had deteriorated so much that I needed to see a specialist for surgery.

“I made a strong plea for Woodthorpe because I knew it had a good reputation, it is local to me and my husband has also had successful surgery at the hospital.”

Mr Alwitry performed the cataract surgery and Lin was able to return home soon after the operation.

Within a couple of days she began to notice the huge difference it had made because she could read a newspaper without reading glasses on.

She said: “The surgery has definitely made a difference and now I’m looking at having the other eye done.

“I was so pleased that I was able to have the surgery a bit sooner than I initially thought so I could watch my grandson take part in a production of Carmen so it was a double boost really.”

Mr Alwitry’s one stop service allows patients to be assessed and have surgery on the same day without having to make several visits to hospital.

Benefits to patients include shorter wait times and fast access and same day diagnosis and treatment.

Mr Alwrity performs over 1,600 cataract procedures each year and was crowned Eye Surgeon of the Year (East Midlands) at the Private Healthcare Awards 2017.

Lin says she was treated like a queen by Mr Alwitry and the staff at Woodthorpe and says she would have no hesitation in recommending the hospital to other patients who require cataract surgery to improve their vision.

Lin said: “I had a wonderful experience in such a smoothly run department and the consultant, Mr Alwitry, was charming, professional and very reassuring.

“I cannot thank the staff at Woodthorpe enough and all the staff showed care, commitment and efficiency and are a shining example for a private hospital.”
