Spinal Imaging Department
What is the Spinal Imaging Department?
Woodthorpe Hospital’s imaging department is staffed by experienced radiographers and consultant radiologists. We have state of the art equipment for the investigation and diagnosis of your back and neck pain.
Our imaging services include:
- X-ray – provides images of your bone alignment. It is used to confirm arthritis, broken/ displaced bones or, a tumour. We perform epidurograms (dye is injected into your spine under X-ray guidance) to obtain an outline of compressed nerve roots. We offer appointments for plain film X-rays as early as the day of referral.
- MRI scanner – visits once a week and appointments are usually offered within one week. MRI provides detailed scans of your discs, vertebrae and nerve roots. It is used to diagnose: prolapsed discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis. It can also rule out spinal infections or tumours.
- CT scanner – visits fortnightly. These scans are detailed and provide cross section images of your vertebrae. CT scans are used to diagnose prolapsed discs or problems with bones, muscles, tendons, nerves, ligaments and blood vessels.
- Ultrasound – pain relieving injections are often administered under ultrasound guidance.
How to access
GPs can refer directly for MRI, CT scans, X-rays and ultrasound. Appointments are normally offered within three to five working days and reported back to the GP within five days.
Private patients can book an appointment for imaging tests directly. However, we will need a GP referral for diagnostic imaging to ensure we have all the correct clinical information.
The department is open: Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm
